Dallas, TX — Thanks to media attention and its popularity among both men and women alike, rhinoplasty has long been in the forefront of plastic surgery. However, the procedure is generally considered one of the most difficult treatments in cosmetic surgery and requires exact precision as well as extensive training to perform correctly. Dr. Spencer Cochran, a rhinoplasty surgeon in Dallas, says finding the right practice for one’s procedure is essential to achieving a safe, effective outcome, and patients need to be aware of several key characteristics that define a good practice when narrowing down their list.

According to recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), rhinoplasty is the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure, with over 243,000 performed last year. Given the vast array of surgeons performing nose reshaping surgery across the country, Dr. Cochran says patients must rely on good research skills to filter out the most qualified practice for achieving a safe, effective result. He says the best place to start is with a surgeon’s credentials, as not all surgeons have undergone the rigorous training required to perform rhinoplasty. Patients should be sure to choose a rhinoplasty surgeon who is board-certified by either the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Otolaryngology.

“Rhinoplasty takes considerable experience and training to get predictable results,” says Dr. Cochran. “It is important to find a surgeon who understands both the aesthetic aspects of nasal surgery as well as the functional aspects.”

Additionally, Dr. Cochran says an essential quality of the ideal rhinoplasty surgeon is a specialization in nasal surgery. Because not all plastic surgeons routinely perform rhinoplasty at their practices, he says choosing one who does is imperative, and patients should inquire about what percentage of the doctor’s procedures are devoted to nose reshaping and/or revision rhinoplasty. Dr. Cochran encourages his Dallas plastic surgery patients also to look at the surgeon’s before and after photos to get a better idea of the type of results they can expect from that particular practice.

“One of the unique things about our practice is that rhinoplasty is our primary focus,” he says. “It is what we do on a day to day basis, and I believe our results reflect that commitment.

Once patients have narrowed their list of potential surgeons, he says patients should trust their instincts and choose the surgeon who is most in tune with their goals and expectations. Similarly, Dr. Cochran stresses the importance of communication between a patient and his or her surgeon, since having an open dialogue about what each patient hopes to achieve is crucial to realizing those goals. Whether they are looking for a primary rhinoplasty procedure or secondary rhinoplasty, he says partnership with an experienced and dedicated practice can help ensure patients receive the highest quality care possible.
