"It’s human nature to pursue happiness and enjoy life. Cosmetic surgery intrigues me because it involves doing what I enjoy to make others happy. To be the best in this field you can't just read a book and learn as you go. The only reasonable way to do it is to learn directly from the "masters" and do a lot of it - hence the fellowship. At this point, I have all of the background knowledge possible, lots of experience, good judgment and the confidence to deliver the best results to those seeking to improve their appearance."
Soft spoken and approachable, Dr. Michael Bogdan’s demeanor is in sharp contrast to what you might expect from a physician of such distinguished academic and surgical accomplishment. Following dual Bachelor of Science degrees—summa cum laude—from the University of Maryland, he attended Stanford where he spent his residency program at Stanford University Medical Center.
“Medicine was my destiny. I’m a science geek with artist’s hands. Cosmetic surgery is satisfying because the results are immediate. It gives me the opportunity to work on all parts of the body, and no two patients are alike. I was attracted to the inherent uniqueness of the specialty coupled with the challenge of my work being so visible.”
After 6 years of General Surgery and Plastic Surgery training, Dr. Bogdan completed an aesthetic surgery fellowship at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital at New York University Medical Center. There he worked side by side with world renowned leaders in the specialty. He is one of few plastic surgeons in the country who have undergone formal post graduate training in aesthetic surgery. Dr. Bogdan explains why this is so important.
"Working with some of the best surgeons in the world was the highlight of my plastic surgery training. The tremendous number of cases I participated in was absolutely amazing! I saw and learned more new and different techniques than I thought possible. The experience really extended my knowledge base and helped catapult my career in aesthetic surgery."
After his fellowship, Dr. Bogdan went into private practice focusing on aesthetic surgery of the face, breast and body with a subspecialty in facial rejuvenation. In his private practice, he has developed his own versions of aesthetic rejuvenation procedures by incorporating the best procedural components from his mentors. According to Dr. Bogdan, facial cosmetic surgery has been maligned by marketing hype promising quick and simple answers to problems that are not really as straightforward as patients are led to believe.
“I am a proponent of using modern techniques while respecting the good science behind traditional procedures. Patients have to know the trade offs. Do you want to save one week of downtime but realize minimal results? In terms of techniques, you should opt for a real operation hidden by a shorter scar. This is where my training stands out…giving my patients lots of options that are aggressive enough to make a long term difference.”
Dr. Bogdan credits his decisiveness and familiarity with facial surgery in lowering the overall risk of the procedure without compromising the outcome.
“I never rush through anything I do, but I tend to be faster than most. At any one point in an operation, I’m comfortable making the best choice from the available options. There’s a huge benefit to the patient by being expeditious.”
Dr. Bogdan has been practicing plastic surgery in Southlake, and recently joined The Gunter Center for Aesthetic Surgery where Dr. Jack Gunter and Dr. Spencer Cochran personify his own high standards. “This is an incredible opportunity. To work beside two top quality surgeons who make patient care and excellent results the cornerstone of their practice…I feel right at home. We complement each other and I can help them grow the practice by offering procedures other than rhinoplasty.”
Dr. Bogdan describes himself as being “a quiet extremist.” “Whatever I’m doing, I want to know the most and give of myself at the highest level. There’s intrinsic value in consistently striving to be the best at what you do and using your gifts to help others realize their own potential.”
