Surgery and Recovery
Facelift surgery is performed in different ways depending on the aesthetic needs of each patient. For many patients, the best option is a traditional facelift. In the traditional facelift, incisions are made along the sides of the face, in front of each ear, and into the hairline near the temples. During facelift surgery, Dr. Marin removes loose skin and fat from the face and neck. This by itself often makes patients appear much younger, and in cases where excess neck fat creates a double chin, neck liposuction as part of the facelift procedure can even help patients to look as though they have lost weight. Dr. Marin is also well versed in performing short-scar facelifts. In this approach, a shorter incision is made in front of the ear and wraps underneath it, forming a “U.” This allows Dr. Marin to treat the facial aging while limiting the scar length and patient’s recovery.
Patients are advised to rest at home after facelift surgery to allow the body time to heal. There may be some swelling, bruising, and numbness following the procedure. To minimize these, it is best to keep the head elevated the first few days after surgery. In about a week, the stitches are removed. Over time, the swelling subsides and results will appear to gradually improve each day with most patients being able to return to their daily routine in two to three weeks.
