Breast Augmentation in Dallas, Texas with Dr. Vincent Marin

The current Featured Procedure is Breast Augmentation. Dr. Vincent Marin has provided answers some of the most common questions about this surgery.

1. Who is a good candidate for Breast Augmentation surgery?

Any healthy woman who would like to increase the size of her breasts is a candidate for a Breast Augmentation. The important decision when proceeding with a standard breast augmentation is whether a woman needs a “lift” (mastopexy) to restore her to a more youthful shape. Certain breast augmentation techniques can provide a patient with a small “lift,” however, different surgical techniques are more appropriate for patients who have ptosis or “aging breasts.”

2. What technique do you use for this procedure and why?

My preferred techniques for inserting breast implants are through the peri-areolar (implants inserted under the nipple) and inframammary (implants inserted through the breast fold). These incisions allow for the most precise and controlled placement of the breast implant which is the most important technical aspect of this procedure. Through these incisions I can also address breast asymmetry or complications from previous breast augmentation. With each of these techniques, breast implants can be placed either above or below the muscle depending upon the patient’s needs.

3. How long is this operation?

The length of this procedure is approximately one hour.

4. What is the typical recovery time after a Breast Augmentation?

A breast augmentation patient should plan on taking 1-3 days off from work or school after having surgery. Patients will be sore for about 1-2 weeks after surgery. We recommend avoiding under-wire bras and heavy lifting for 6 weeks. However, our patients are encouraged to return to their regular activities as soon as they are able.

5. Will having breast implants affect future breast feeding or mammograms?

No, having breast implants does not affect mammograms or a woman's ability to breast feed. Most radiologists are experienced at reading mammograms in patients who have breast implants. We recommend pre-operative mammograms for any patient who has a family history of breast cancer in accordance with the recommendations of the American Cancer Society.

Interestingly, a recent study from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that followed over 3,400 patients for an average of 18 years, found a slightly lower incidence of breast cancer in those women who had breast implants. Thus, we feel confident in recommending this surgery to our patients, and that breast augmentation surgery does not carry with it any additional risk for developing breast cancer.
